Q: Is it possible to have two ISPs? Although I am quite happy with the one I use for hosting my website, I would prefer to use another for cheaper access to the net for personal surfing.
A: The simple answer to your question is yes. In fact, many people have a number of free internet service providers (ISPs) which they use so they have a choice if any one provider is unavailable. There are any number of free ISPs out there - I find that it is often best to try the smaller less well-known free ISPs as they don't have the same volume of users as the bigger names such as Freeserve. Two smaller ISPs I have found to be very good are www.gofree.co.uk and www.eidosnet.co.uk - eidosnet is particularly good if you have ISDN as it supports dual-channel dial-up.
Q: I have a computer with an onboard sound card, I recently re-installed Windows and now I can't get the sound working. Any ideas?
A: To be honest, onboard soundcards can be really problematical. You should check in the BIOS to see if the sound feature is enabled. If you don't know how to do this, get someone who knows how to or consult the motherboard manual. Generally, you can access the BIOS set-up when the machine is switched on by pressing the DEL key. But remember, you should only change BIOS settings if you are sure you know what you are doing. You could take the machine to a computer shop but in the end you might just as well disable the onboard sound and fit a standard sound card. Try to get a cheap genuine SoundBlaster card - you should be able to pick one up for around £15. It will save you a lot of trouble in the end.
Q: I have just bought a HP DeskJet 850c printer for my computer but when I try to print to it I get the message 'No Default Printer'. What am I doing wrong?
A: It is likely that although you have connected the printer to the computer, you probably haven't installed a driver (a piece of software which lets your computer 'talk' to the printer). Click on the 'Start' button and select 'Printers' from the 'Settings' menu. If your printer is not listed, double-click on the 'Add Printer' icon. You will then be asked to choose between a local or network printer, in your case it is a local printer so click 'Next'. Select the port your printer is connected to (probably LPT1) and click 'Next'. Choose HP from the list of manufacturers, then scroll down the list of printers, click on the DeskJet 850c entry, and then click on 'Next'. Set the default printer to yes and click 'Next'. Choose to print a test page (making sure the printer is online and has paper) and click finish. You may be prompted to insert the Windows 98 CD.
