A star-studded bash at one of Brighton's top hotels will mark the launch of this year's Argus Appeal.

Larger than life television personality Christopher Biggins will host the event which includes a champagne reception, meal, cabaret and disco.

It signals the start of the paper's campaign to raise money for sick and needy children in Sussex.

The Grand Hotel has been chosen as the venue for the occasion and there will be performances by Abba tribute band BjornFree, Suspiciously Elvis and a Tom Jones impersonator.

Celebrity guests who have already accepted invitations include singer Adam Faith and Shoreham-based Derek Jameson.

TV presenter Nick Owen will try to persuade the glittering crowd to empty their pockets in aid of the charity appeal.

Mike Mendoza, who is stage managing the event, said: "There has never been an event seen like this before in Brighton. It is unusual to get a triple bill of cabaret acts and we expect Christopher Biggins to invite a lot of his showbiz friends."

The appeal will replace the annual Christmas Argus Appeal in a bid to help even more children than in previous years.

The dinner is being held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton on September 9 until 2am and is invitation only.
