Tories are calling on their council to spend more than £400,000 on supporting bus services which do not make a profit.

Earlier this year, Labour-controlled Brighton and Hove Council decided not to increase its budget for supporting three buses.

As a result, big cuts will be made in many services starting next month.

Bus companies increased their tenders for the council mainly because of sharp rises in fuel and wages.

But the council said it could not afford to pay the extra £410,000 needed to keep supported bus services at their present level.

Tories have now tabled a notice of motion for the next council meeting on September 21.

Opposition Tory leader Geoffrey Theobald said he has already received a large petition against the cuts from people in Ovingdean.
