Martin and Margaret Rutt took on the job of running South Chailey's ailing shop after Martin took early retirement from his job as a Seeboard manager.
Now, two years later, the couple have transformed the South Chailey Post Office and Stores into a thriving business.
With the help of their son, Chris, and ten members of staff, they work long hours to keep the village supplied with everything from stamps to home-baked frozen ready-meals.
Martin and Margaret's shop has become something of a social centre for the village, with many regulars stopping to chat after buying their essentials.
The couple have even started a monthly newsletter for the village.
Chris Rutt said: "I know my parents are very well liked and loved in the village and they have made a lot of friends.
"I think people appreciate what they have done since they took over."
