Shop owner Ron Kemp had a shock when a car smashed into the front of his shop as he watched TV.
The Mercedes estate ploughed into the window then swerved backwards into the road only yards from a police station.
Mr Kemp, sitting in his lounge above the store, had closed for the day four hours earlier.
Mr Kemp, who has owned the shop, called Ron's, in Mount Pleasant, Lewes, for more than 25 years, said: "I was watching the football results when I heard a big bang.
"It took me a while to realise the car had hit the shop."
Ally Mobbs, 15, who lives a few doors from the shop, heard the crash just after 5pm on Saturday and ran out of his front door to see officers from the nearby police station running towards the D-registered car.
He said: "I saw a man crawling out of the passenger seat on to the pavement."
PC Marc Fallon closed off Mount Pleasant until building inspectors arrived to make sure the building was safe.
After the crash, Mr Kemp watched football on the television in the Elephant and Castle pub nearby until structural engineers gave the all clear for him to return home.
He said: "I don't know what damage it has caused yet.
"The front window is such a big space in the front of the shop."
A man in his twenties, who had suffered a head injury in the crash but refused hospital treatment, was taken to Eastbourne police station.
He was later arrested.
