Hundreds of police officers, many dressed in riot gear and some with their identification numbers covered, were present during the protest which took place on the seafront on Sunday.
This level of policing was intimidating, unnecessary and, presumably, very expensive. The entirely peaceful protest was supported by a wide range of trade unions, communities and human rights groups, the Green Party and ordinary members of the public, concerned about the deaths resulting from the environmental and debt burden placed by the UK on developing countries.
