Clergymen have swapped dog-collars for aprons to dish up the best value big breakfast in town.

People are flocking to a Brighton church to tuck into its massive fry-ups at a heavenly £1 a plate.

Staff at St Michael and All Angels, in Victoria Road, Hove, are not feeding the 5,000 yet - but once word gets round, customers could be queuing down the street.

For £1 you get egg, bacon, fried bread, beans or tomatoes in what is dubbed a standard breakfast. The £2 super deluxe version consists of two eggs, sausage, bacon, fried bread, tomatoes, mushrooms and beans.

That's less than half the amount charged on Brighton seafront just ten minutes walk away.

St Michael's, a huge listed Victorian building nicknamed the Cathedral of the Back Streets, opens up its church hall for breakfasts every Saturday from 9am to 11am.

Father Robert Fayers, who joined the church less than three months ago, said: "We started it off for single people, perhaps living in bedsits, to make sure they had at least one decent breakfast a week.

"But it has taken off and we get a cross-section of the community coming through the door."

Church warden John Matthew said: "All our workers are volunteers and we work absolutely on rock-bottom cost.

"But we are not out to drag people into church. We are there to give people some kind of community spirit and help.

"We have got a lot of regular customers, which must mean they are satisfied."

The church can currently cater for only 70-odd people on a Saturday morning, but hopes to upgrade its kitchen with any profits from the breakfast club.
