A wealth of patience and understanding are required when considering the sometimes complicated dynamics of step-families.

Sonia and Dave met about eight years ago. They hit it off straight away after being introduced by mutual friends. Sonia was divorced with three children aged ten, seven and five, Dave was single. Their relationship developed slowly over several years, during which time they each kept their separate homes. The children liked Dave and he, too, felt comfortable with them.

They had built a good life together and decided the time was right to make a firm commitment. By now the children were teenagers which enabled Sonia and Dave to spend more time as a couple.

Life in their household is not always harmonious. Conflicts take place. Their strength is in the fact that they communicate well. The other secret is timing, not rushing the relationship and allowing it to develop slowly.
