Chris Baker wrote recently that the Countryside Agency was being accused of moving too slowly towards creating a South Downs National Park.
I want to give my assurances that far from moving slowly, we are working hard to bring about this new national park for the 21st century as quickly as possible. But it is important we take time to ensure we hear the views of everyone in the area on a number of complex issues, not just the political protagonists.
The administrative options are complex and it is especially important we get these right in such a large area, covered by 15 local authorities. We must ensure a well-resourced, influential and strategic National Park Authority has the powers, skills and budget to deliver real results for the area using the best available practise.
This will all time time: Up to two-and-a-half years. In the meantime, we, with other bodies - in particular the Sussex Downs Conservation Board and the East Hampshire AONB Joint Advisory Committee - will continue to care for the area.
