This is the aftermath of a horrific head-on crash in Brighton last night.
A Ford Granada drove up the wrong side of a dual carriageway after police tried to stop it for not having its headlights on.
A patrol car followed the Granada into Marina Drive towards Brighton Marina.
The Granada then crossed the road and and headed into the path of an oncoming Ford Escort on the westbound A259.
It flipped into the air and came to rest upside down on an embankment, its roof skewered by a signpost.
Amazingly, neither driver was seriously hurt. A man was arrested at the scene.
Police say he will be questioned in connection with offences including driving while disqualified.
One witness said his friend was physically sick after watching the crash, which happened at 9.15pm.
The 25-year-old mechanic from Peacehaven, who did not want to be named, was driving his friend to Brighton at the time.
He said: "The Granada flipped into the air and ended up on the embankment. It was horrific."
Sergeant Bob Trevis, of Shoreham traffic police, said: "For some reason we don't yet know, the car drove along the central reservation, where the police car did not follow, and was involved in a head-on collision."
