What an arrogant man Adam Trimingham is. His comments about pensioners were outrageous. We indeed are the pensioners of the war years and myself, my mother and grandmother were all widows.
Women in those days weren't supposed to work and if one had children and no pension the wages we worked for kept us on the poverty line. We had no choice of what food we ate and didn't have any spare money to save. Survival was the order of the day.
Perhaps the pensioners Adam is talking about here in Sussex are the more wealthy ones. But look around, Adam, and you'll see the pensioners on the poverty line, who buy their clothes in charity shops and have nowhere to go.
