Oakwood manager Andy Maddox is still surprised how well his young side are doing.

A 1-1 draw at Peacehaven on Saturday leaves Oaks third in division two of the County League, having suffered only one defeat in eight league games.

It is a remarkable effort for a team who some may have tipped for relegation before the campaign started.

Maddox said: "It was a surprise early on in the season but I knew we had quality boys in the team. The surprise for me now is that we have sustained it.

"The average age of the side is 20. We play five in midfield and the whole of that midfield, barring Graham Vivian, was my under-18 midfield of two seasons ago."

Oakwood rode their luck at Peacehaven on Saturday after taking a first-half lead through Glen Woodburn. The home side hit the bar twice through Ben Nyamabo and Archie Macabi in the second half. Allan Ashdown also went close before Darren Mansell's cross was headed into his own net by Carl Azzoo ten minutes from time.

Peacehaven boss Peter Edwards said: "The league is wide open and it can go anyway with at least ten teams involved. If we can start scoring goals, we will be among them."

Worthing United continue to lead the table after a 3-2 win at home to Crawley Down, who netted through Danny Tidey and Matt Stevenson. Gavin Jones and Nigel Waller (two) put Worthing 3-1 up inside 22 minutes.

Oving are second after strikes from Jimmy Hasler (penalty), Stuart MacIntosh and Kevin Dewey secured a 3-2 win at home to Hailsham Town, who had fought back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 thanks to Dave Adams and Dean Chamberlain.

A goal from Kevin Wright earned East Grinstead a surprise win at much-changed Southwick.

The winner came on 69 minutes when Jon Richardson fed Wright who skipped past two challenges before dummying the keeper and slotting home.

Manager Bobby Smith said: "It could have gone either way. We have possibly the best defence in the league but we desperately need a goalscorer."

Strikes from Brian Clarke and Wayne Hine secured Bosham a 2-1 win at home to Wealden, who had taken the lead through Lee Sale's fifth goal of the season.

Lingfield fought back from 2-0 down to beat Mile Oak 4-3 with goals from Scott Wright, Mick Lowe, Mark Bond and Paul Roberts. Allen Woods, Jamie Harman and David Ayre netted for the visitors.

Westfield and Shoreham shared a goalless draw.

Broadbridge Heath did the second division proud with their 2-2 Senior Cup draw at home to Wick, but it could have been even better for Sam Chapman's side.

Paul Young and Chris Hughes had put Heath 2-0 ahead, but boss Sam Chapman said: "We knew it was not job done even at 2-0 because Wick had a lot of the ball."

Goals from Craig Bishop and Daryl Billingham earned Crowborough a 2-1 win over Storrington, for whom Ben Whitby netted.

Clive Connell got Shinewater's consolation in an 8-1 drubbing by Pagham.

SELSEY manager Danny Hinshelwood has turned down a move to Burgess Hill, who wanted him as player-coach.
