Murray Goodwin is joining Sussex as their overseas player next season.

The former Zimbabwean Test star has agreed a one-year contract to replace Michael Bevan who has asked to rest next summer.

Goodwin opted for Sussex ahead of two other counties who were trying to sign the 28-year-old.

He will team-up with his new team-mates in early April ahead of the start of the new season on the 25th.

Skipper Chris Adams is delighted the county have made another good signing following the recruitment of South African born off-spinner Mark Davis.

He said: "Michael Bevan told us he would be an excellent player and you don't get a higher recommendation than that."

Harare-born Goodwin played in 19 Tests scoring three hundreds and averaging 42.84. He decided to retire from international cricket after this summer's tour of England so he could settle down in Perth where he has lived since the age of 12.

Goodwin has just agreed a new three-year contract with Western Australia and has a first-class average of 46.44.

"We are desperate to do really well next season after a poor season and Murray is another part of the jigsaw," added Adams. "We're delighted to have him with us."
