A Good Samaritan who was repeatedly kicked in the head when he went to another man's aid has been moved out of intensive care.
The attack happened in St James's Street, Brighton, at 1.50am on Saturday.
The 42-year-old man had gone to help another man who was being attacked for the way he was dressed.
Police are treating that assault, on a 29-year-old man, as a homophobic incident.
Both men were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The younger man was released after treatment and the older man has been in intensive care with serious head injuries. He was moved on to a ward last night.
A police spokesman said: "He appears to be responding to treatment and has been moved to a ward and police are waiting to speak to him."
Two 17-year-olds are helping police with their inquiries.
