Lewes MP Norman Baker has forked out £1,500 of his own money to distribute a report saying how well he is doing as the only Liberal Democrat MP in Sussex to 38,000 homes.

The glossy report includes media comments about the MP, who has angered and frustrated opposition MPs and Government ministers since winning the seat with a majority of 1,300 in 1997.

The report, which cost around £4,000, is partly paid for by local advertisers. But because of lack of funds in the Liberal Democrat Party, Mr Baker reckons he will have to make up the difference of around £1,500.

It quotes the presenter of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, James Naughtie, describing him as: "A fully paid up member of the awkward squad," and the Sunday Express describing him as a "Scourge of the Establishment"

The report says he has asked more questions than any other MP in Parliament, winning praise from John Major.

It tells of his work as the party's media and consumer affairs spokes-man and how he led the attack on the Millennium Dome.

He also mentions his part in successfully campaigning for free TV licences for pensioners and his opposition to building 43,000 homes in the South East.

He said: "When I was elected I promised I would keep constituents in touch. I am not giving myself marks out of ten in my report, it is up for my constituents to do that."
