Police are hunting for a callous hit-and-run driver who left a window cleaner fighting for his life.
Mark Herzig, 42, was knocked off his bike in New Road, Durrington, Worthing, yesterday.
He was taken to Worthing Hospital and later transferred to the neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.
His condition was today described as critical.
Mr Herzig, who is single and lives in Cheviot Close, Worthing, is a self-employed window cleaner but he was not working when the accident happened.
Police believe he was riding to a friend's house when he was hit at 4.30pm, leaving the bicycle a twisted wreck.
Sergeant Clive Mead said: "The car made off from the scene without stopping and we are very anxious to trace anyone who witnessed the crash."
People with information should ring Shoreham police traffic department on 0845 6070999.
