I was disgusted to read the Argus is promoting a policy of encouraging people not to give to beggars. With the season of goodwill approaching, to actively discourage compassion in this way seems utterly irresponsible. Many people know someone whose child has gone astray and ended up on the streets, often due to apalling home situations.
Instead of encouraging attitudes of scapegoating and witch hunting, it would be more encouraging to see the Press actively campaigning to provide adequate housing so no one need be out on the streets. There is a desperate shortage of accommodation.
First things first. Once housing and a basic income is provided we can then stop the people seeking to exploit the public.
