The Football League is asking Hull City for an explanation to the overcrowding at Boothferry Park on Friday night when over 1,000 Albion fans were squashed into an area meant for 300.
Several Albion fans have written letters of complaint to the Football League's head offices in London and Preston.
Spokesman for the Football League John Nagle said: "We have received a complaint about the way Albion fans were accommodated at the match at Boothferry Park. We will be writing to Hull City and asking for their observations.
"If necessary, we will visit the ground watch their stewarding arrangements at a forthcoming match and give advice as to how the situation can be improved.
"Clubs are in touch with each other before games and should know the number of supporters the away team is expecting to bring. We normally leave it up to the clubs concerned to anticipate the size of gate they are expecting and to liaise with stewards and police accordingly."
Hove MP Ivor Caplin, who travels to as many away games as his diary permits, said: "As the Albion continue their excellent form and push for promotion, it is vital that clubs throughout the division make adequate provision for large numbers of travelling Albion fans."
