Leaders Crawley Town stumbled to their third straight defeat when they lost 1-0 at Moor Green with an unconvincing display that left skipper John Ugbah calling for changes.
Reds could have moved five points clear at the top of the premier with victory.
Ugbah said: "I think that the time has come for a few new faces to come in. The players have done well to get us where we are but that is not the job done. We just do not know where it has all been going wrong.
"It was very frustrating at Moor Green and we know that over the last three games we have been awful."
Crawley goalkeeper Andy Little had to make a fine save from Mark Shepherd, tipping his goalbound header onto the crossbar and over before scooping a Chris Gillard header off the goal-line.
The hosts' Mark Crisp hit the side-netting before Shepherd had a headed effort from a Jamie Petty cross ruled out for off side.
Threatened Reds threatened in the first half and Danny Carroll had a header palmed away by goalkeeper Andy De Bont and Curtis Johnson scuffed a chance wide.
But the conviction evident earlier in the season was missing, although Reds' improved after the interval.
Luke Anderson was unlucky for Crawley as he headed a Mark Hynes cross against the bar on the hour, but Shepherd also hit the woodwork at the other end.
Moor Green scored the winning goal on 67 minutes when Crisp was put in to beat Little with a low finish.
Reds went close through a Matt Woolf's free-kick. Johnson was also denied at close range by De Bont while Francis Vines hit the side-netting.
Langney Sports produced a brave performance as they went down 3-1 at high-flying Rothwell Town in the eastern division.
They failed to overcome a first-minute setback when home midfielder Simon Hill fired home.
Matt Crabb, Jason Reed and Matt Allen causing problems for the hosts.
Sports were rewarded on 54 minutes when fine work by Reed set up Allen for a well-taken equaliser.
But defensive lapses in concentration cost the visitors side dearly and allowed Rothwell to score twice in three minutes and move to the top of the table.
Lewis Mogg netted with a fierce drive on 77 minutes and the impressive Jason Turner completed the scoring.
St Leonards failed to recover after going a goal down in the first minute and lost 4-1 at Newport (Isle of Wight).
A run from Tom Betteridge resulted in Lee Dent volleying in at the near post. Six minutes later Newport doubled their lead when a Steve Moss corner was only half cleared and Chris Collins headed in from close range.
Saints' best opportunity came in the 17th minute, but Danny Fletcher shot just over. Newport almost added a third but Adam Day cleared off the line from a Steve Riley header.
Saints were 3-0 down in the 34th minute after a long throw from Karl Lis was flicked on and Collins headed home. Newport added their fourth in the 73rd minute when Graham Bannatyne could only parry a Steve Leigh header and substitute Ashley Wright scored from close range.
Saints got a consolation eight minutes from time through Fletcher.
