It's nonsense for protesters to claim majority local support for their campaign against Steyning Parish Council's proposal to allow a Scout hut with a small parking area in an unused corner of the field behind the bowling pavilion.
In fact, the matter was of such irrelevance 83 per cent of Steyning residents did not consider it worthwhile turning out to vote on it.
The 'referendum' has already cost Steyning residents £3 per vote cast. The suggestion of another referendum to try to obtain a vote of no confidence in the Parish Council is a shocking waste of taxpayers' money which could be better spent on local facilities, and a disgraceful slur on parish council members, who have freely-given their time and worked hard for their community in so many ways over recent years.
The matter now has all the signs of moving from a social issue to an obsessive psychological problem for a small number of people who are never going to accept any decision which is not the implementation of their vocal minority view.
I hope the council will now press ahead with this important facility for our young
people.
-Jack Campbell, King Alfred Close, Steyning
