Father and son Joe and Jamie Laidlaw were all smiles as Chichester City United surged into the second round following a 5-2 victory over Eastbourne United at Church Road.

Assistant manager Joe's son banged in a first-half hat-trick to ensure they went into the hat for the second round on a bad day for other Sussex County League sides.

The victory was also revenge for last Saturday's 2-1 league defeat against Mick French's visitors.

Joe said: "They caught us on the hop a little last week but we knew a bit more about them this time and we changed the formation and it worked.

"We went at them straight from the start but what was really impressive was Jamie's hat-trick in the first 20 minutes."

A far post header after two minutes, followed by two great finishes on ten and 18, put the hosts in control and took the former Swindon Town professional to 17 goals in 17 appearances.

A Paul Thomas penalty on the half-hour and a volley from Chad Franklin on 70 minutes completed Chichester's scoring while Eastbourne replied with Morris and Dave Harris scoring at the end of either half.

Sent off Chichester also had Darren Hewitt sent off following a clash in the second half.

Laidlaw senior added: "I think it is important for the County League that we have a side do well in the Vase.

"It's about time somebody from this league had a good run.

"If we can maintain this squad, and steer clear of injuries and suspensions, I think we can do well.

"We just want a home draw in the next round."

Ryman League Lewes, edged out County Leaguers Wick 2-1 at the Dripping Pan.

The Rooks, who lost in a penalty shoot-out against Ryman Premier side Dulwich Hamlet in an FA Cup replay in midweek, beat Carl Stabler's outfit 2-1 with Paul Arscott grabbing the winner with a well-taken 20-yard free-kick after 64 minutes.

Earlier, Warren Bagnall had put the Rooks ahead, but Wick's efforts were rewarded when Gareth Green equalised.

Lewes manager Jimmy Quinn said: "After the exploits of midweek there was a lot of tired and disappointed bodies out there for us.

"It was a heavy pitch too and playing a local side like Wick meant they were well up for the game and we struggled at times."

Arundel made their Ryman League opponents Molesey work hard for a 3-2 victory and passage into the second round.

Manager Mick Rowland said: "I thought we were the better side."

Two questionable goals by the visitors did not help the hosts' cause with Molesey scoring their third with an Arundel player prostrate with a head injury.

Jason Wimbleton and Miles Scerri, with goals in the 27th and 71st minute respectively, supplied Arundel's goals at Mill Road.

Molesey fielded former England and Albion player Clive Walker.
