DNA is proving vital in the war against crime.
Technology is now so advanced that a minute amount of material left at the scene of the crime can be linked to one person.
Sussex Police has been at the forefront of using new technology to pick up DNA samples from crime scenes.
Figures show this paying off, with 426 positive identifications in the quarter ending in September.
The public likes to see bobbies on the beat, but a recent survey showed the average policeman patrolling the streets only comes across one burglary being committed in eight years.
The way to fight crime these days is to make use of the latest technology and DNA testing.
Sussex Police should be given all the resources to keep up with the advances and to attend all scenes of crime, from the smallest burglary and car theft upwards.
Only by doing this will criminals get the message.
