Among the most popular TV hits of the last few years have been home improvement show Changing Rooms and the voyeuristic docusoap Big Brother.
Now a Brighton entrepreneur has come up with a project combining elements of both.
Richard Furlong plans to transform his Brighton bungalow into a two-storey executive home complete with loft conversion and broadcast every stage of the work over the internet.
The addition of an extra storey will increase the house's floor space from 980sqft to 3,315sqft, without extending it outwards.
The 36-year-old former auctioneer and fine art director will hire local and national building contractors to carry out the work, which will be filmed each day and broadcast on his web site in the evenings.
The idea is to show the entire process, including any mistakes and problems encountered on the project, which is known as Raise the Roof.
As well as entertainment, the internet home will teach viewers how to carry out jobs such as fitting windows or laying floors and give manufacturers and contractors the chance to showcase products and services.
Mr Furlong said: "I am hoping to generate a lot of interest in the project and get people hooked on it. In the first stages in January I am expecting to acheive about 50,000 hits every evening.
"It is an opportunity for firms to show the public how they work and what they actually do."
Several companies, including window firm Velux, have already said they would like to be involved in the project, providing workmen, products and materials.
The site will also contain an archive which visitors can browse to find details of a particular product or how to carry out a certain DIY task.
Eventually they will also be able to search for and order products, materials and services relating to the home, browse catalogues and access links to company web sites.
The site will go live on January 8, which is also day one of the project to transform Mr Furlong's bungalow.
When the building work is finished, the house, situated off Brighton's Dyke Road, will be auctioned over the internet.
