It nearly broke my heart when a few days ago my three-year-old son looked outside the house and asked: "Mummy, where's my monster gone?" His monster, a carved hallowe'en pumpkin, had been stolen by trick-or-treaters early the previous evening, despite us giving away treats to numerous bell-ringers.

Last year someone smashed our pumpkin. The year before a large stone garden ornament was stolen and left at a local bus top.

When I took him to nursery, we found our pumpkin smashed all over the road. Parents of trick-or-treaters be warned - if there is any theft or vandalism to our home next year we will not hesitate to call the police.
