Patcham is one local area which has suffered damage from the recent flooding. I am concerned before everyone gets complacent again - thinking nothing like this will happen for the next five, ten or 20 years - that some thought and action should be put into planning things to prevent flooding in future.
Am I right in thinking Southern Water has the capability of keeping the water table down by suitable pumping operations, so the flooding we have had in Patcham does not occur again?
No doubt some cost would be incurred by doing this and it would only be fair Southern Water did not have to carry all the cost of this operation unless it was deriving some benefit itself. Could a portion of John Prescott's promise of £51 million for flood damage be allocated for this purpose?
In this way, householders would not be inconvenienced, Brighton and Hove Council would not be involved in a lot of extra hassle, Southern Water could take the credit and the Environmental Agency would gain in credibility. Happiness all round.
