She may be only two days old but tiny Rachel Wick is about to go down in history as the first citizen of the new city of Brighton and Hove.

Rachel was born at 12.15pm on Monday, just 45 minutes after Brighton and Hove was officially named as a city in the House of Commons.

It makes her the first person to be born in the prestigious new city.

Annie and Chris Wick, of Woodingdean, are the proud parents of Rachel, who was delivered at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton weighing 6lb 13oz.

Chris, 33, who works for the Environment Agency, said: "I only realised we had become a city when I read about it in the Argus this morning.

"Then the midwife rang up and told us Rachel was the first Brighton city citizen. I hope being a city will help bring the two halves, Brighton and Hove, together."

Chris and Annie came to Brighton 15 years ago and instantly fell in love with the place.

Annie, 35, said: "I knew we were trying to become a city but I didn't realise it was being announced this week.

"It is wonderful for Rachel and this will be something for us to remember in years to come."
