Eastbourne Rovers can look back on a successful season in which their riders have won awards in all age categories.

Philip Smith, 10, from Hailsham, was the overall winner of the Sussex juvenile track league by 24 points. He also shone in the circuit races at Hove Park.

Jon Sharples led the senior riders. He won the Sussex Road Race and Ten-mile Time Trial Championships and the Hampshire RC 10-mile event at Fontwell.

With Simon Prior second and Boyd Johnson fourth, Rovers were the team winners.

In Rovers' own open 25-mile time trial Sharples, with backing from Lloyd Grayston and Graeme Hadlow, led the team to another good season.

Harry Featherstone, 67, the former Olympic triallist and ex-national champion was the handicap winner in several events, including the Surrey and Sussex Veterans' 25, the Sotonia CC 25 and the Hampshire RC 10.

Another club celebrating a good year are Brighton Mitre. Founded in 1894, Mitre are one of the oldest clubs in the country.

Tristan Court was their leading rider this year, setting new club records over ten, 25, 30 and 50 miles. He also won the International Cycling Federation's 22km Time Trial Championship and the Hampshire RC 30-mile open time trial.

Other members who rode well included Tony Richardson, Gary Smith, Jay Chisnall and Mike Townley.

Brighton's Jonathan Sharpe (Cycleweb), the new Sussex cyclo-cross champion, finished seventh in the Twickenham CC open event and is now making a serious bid to win the London League's points championship.
