Twenty years ago Brighton Marina was a white elephant - a harbour next to a hugely expensive building site.

Now it is a buzzing, lively centre with a superstore, multiplex cinemas, shops, restaurant and one of the biggest harbours in Europe.

Soon it will be one of the biggest leisure and shopping complexes in the South with plans including a hotel, cafes, a casino and offices.

Not only will all this development make the Marina even more of a draw for tourist and locals but it will also create up to 1,000 new jobs.

These are sorely needed. Although Brighton and Hove has boomed in the last three years, the unemployment rate is still way above average.

The new development will more or less complete the Marina almost 40 years after it was first conceived.

Then it was called a city in the sea. Now it's a pulsating new village in the city by the sea.
