Angling: Carp ace Paul is calling the Tune

Michael Gibbon used home made boilies for a mirror of 24lb 12oz and John Siggs fished Activ 8 boilies for carp scaling 23lb 4oz and 17lb 2oz.

Only the Specimen Lake and Match Lake are open at present. On the latter, weights during competitions were up to 30lb, which is expected to rise after the introduction of fresh stock.

Trevor Knight, of Brighton, landed several carp at Alderwood Ponds, fishing to the Island on Island Lake with strawberry boilies. His biggest weighed 22lb.

The fish was a mirror, but the carp captured by Paul Evans in a 65lb bag was a common. It was caught 5ft from the bank on luncheon meat, a size 12 barbless hook and 5lb line and weighed 23lb.

Dave Croke from Squires Tackle Shop in Southwick fished with cranberry and caviar boilies to catch seven carp, which were a mixture of commons and mirrors, from 7lb to 16lb 8oz.

The fishery carp record was broken at Wylands Angling Centre when Danny Dove fished Kell Lake with strawberry cream boilies to catch a common carp of 28lb.

Carp are still feeding on the surface in this fishery and have been caught on dog biscuits from House Lake to 12lb and Middle Lake to 8lb.

Roach, bream and rudd have also made up the weights on Middle Lake while, on Old Specimen Lake, luncheon meat and maggots fished over groundbait has produced carp to 8lb from the margins.

Match Lake weights during competitions were up to 40lb.

Roach, bream and rudd with the odd tench to 3lb have been caught from Sharnfold Farm Fishery, but best results have been achieved by anglers fishing with 1 1/2lb line, size 18 hooks and either single maggot or caster.

Perch are showing to 2lb 8oz in the main lake at Passies Ponds, where they were caught on caster fished over chopped worm. A few chub in the 3lb 8oz to 4lb range were also caught along with lots of roach, skimmers and the odd tench.

The best results were achieved pole fishing with caster, though some fish were taken on the waggler.
