West Hove has not been relocated for very long but Duncan Haste, the 29-year-old greenkeeper and one of the youngest in the county, has been commended for his work.

Duncan, son of Keith Haste, the West Hove managing secretary, has been named Sussex PGU Greenkeeper of the Year.

He received the certificate praising the "consistent and excellent preparation of the course to the highest standard for all professional events" from Cliff Pluck, secretary of the SPGU.

Duncan has been in charge of the outdoor staff at West Hove for only 18 months. Despite long periods of unfavourable weather, he has been instrumental in keeping the West Hove flag flying.

Next year comes his greatest test when the Sussex Professional Championship will be played at West Hove on September 19.
