P.R. Mockridge (Opinion, December 8) implied councils have discretion to reduce or waive council tax. I would like to clarify this issue for the benefit of
readers.
Lewes District Council administers a National Council Tax Scheme that applies to all relevant councils across the country. Exemptions can be claimed by taxpayers if they meet specified criteria and Lewes District Council gives details of discounts and exemptions on the back of each year's council tax.
If the criteria are met, the exemption is given. There is no discretion in the matter.
-Coun Judith Ost, lead member for local taxation at Lewes District Council
