Congratulations to the Sussex heroes who have been rewarded in the New Year's Honours List today.

From the already famous to those who diligently go about their jobs and charity work, their recognition is much deserved.

The pleasure Ted Dexter, Spike Milligan, Paul Scofield, Patrick Moore and Annie Nightingale have given millions over the years is justifiably recognised in an imaginative list, which has done away with some of the stuffy images of past honours.

It is right for entertainers and sportsmen to be honoured for their dedication, hours of rehearsing and training.

Just as it is also right for the unsung heroes who have worked selflessly for their causes, such as Betty Brown of Pulborough for her work with the Guides, Elsie Scullion of Horsham for services to the local community and Jamie Lee-Judson for her work in rescuing labrador dogs.

The list also recognises people who do their public service jobs well.

Hence it is good to see Peter Midgley, the Sussex area manager of the Environment Agency, honoured for the hard work and overtime he and his team have done during rain lashed 2000.
