A woman made an MBE for launching the country's first Labrador dog rescue service has told how finding a £5 note turned her dream into reality.
Jamie Lee-Judson has successfully rehomed hundreds of dogs since founding the Labrador Rescue Society, based in East Preston, near Worthing.
It started in 1975 when she found a £5 note while walking her own dogs - and used it to pay for a newspaper advert for her fledgling service.
Since then the mother-of-two has helped find new homes for dogs whose owners can no longer care for them properly.
She has maintained her practice of introducing a dog's new owners to its previous owners, to encourage the "essential involvement of all parties concerned".
Mrs Lee-Judson has never run kennels, preferring to move Labradors directly from one home to another.
She said: "I am still in a state of complete shock to have received an MBE. I had no idea so many people who think the work I do is so worthy. I am very thrilled."
