When centenarian Annie Hilton was born Queen Victoria was on the throne and the computer had not been invented.
Mrs Hilton, who celebrated her 105th birthday on New Year's Day, is one of a small group of people to have lived in three different centuries.
The anniversary of her birth was marked by a letter from the Queen and a toast from Andy Durr, the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, during a party in her honour.
Five generations of Mrs Hilton's family attended the event at residential home Norman Latham House, in Southwick.
Her daughter, Claire Matthews, from Shoreham, said: "My mother attributes her long life to her strong faith and is a very determined lady."
Mrs Hilton was born in Manchester and moved to Fishergate, in Portslade, when she married her first husband, with whom she had three daughters.
