Ivor Caplin MP has paid tribute to the people of his Hove constituency for playing a vital role in winning city status for Brighton and Hove.
Mr Caplin said Hove's enhanced profile had put it on the map during the last year.
He said: "While some cynics continue to knock Hove the granting of city status is a great tribute to the people of Hove and Portslade.
"I would like to pay tribute to them, particularly to those who organised community festivals such as those at Poets Corner and Portslade, who really have shown how communities can go forward."
Last year, the area was twice visited by Prime Minister Tony Blair and had no fewer than 20 visits from other Government ministers.
These included two visits each by former Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam and Margaret Beckett.
Mr Caplin said the city had also benefited as a whole from Government spending initiatives, with money for education rising by 25 per cent during three years to £111 million.
Mr Caplin also highlighted improvements in policing the area.
He said: "Recent policing initiatives in Hove are resulting in more police on the streets and helping to create a safer environment for all."
