In answer to John McManus (Opinion, December 28) it may surprise him to learn that as well as being a car driver, I am also a pedestrian. I ride a pedal bike and in the past have been knocked off my own motorcycle by a motorist coming out of his drive without looking.

If he looks back through the letters pages he will see that I regularly speak out against the selfish or incompetent motorist.

The reason for my original letter was not to support the dangerous motorist but to make the point that the motorcycle is the biggest peacetime killer of male youths between 18 and 25. The reality of life is that when a motorcyclist takes to the road he has to rely on several million car drivers not making a single mistake. That is why I got rid of my motorcycle.
