Brighton and Hove Buses is introducing its new flat fare system this weekend.

From Sunday, a £1 fare for any distance will apply during a four-month trial.

A brochure giving details of the scheme has been delivered to more than 100,000 households between Shoreham and Newhaven this week.

From this weekend, buses will also be exhibiting eye-catching posters promoting the new arrangements.

At present single fares range from 80p to £1.50 and these will be replaced by the new £1 flat fares.

Maximum daily tickets of £2.20 in an area from central Hove to East Brighton or £2.60 for the entire network will still apply.

Pensioners and youngsters will continue to receive discounts of 50 per cent with a Sussex Countycard or Bus ID.

Although short distance fares rise by 25 per cent, the company has introduced special deals of a return journey for the price of a single.

Roger French, managing director, said: "We expect the simplified system will lead to faster boarding times at bus stops.

"It should particularly encourage people to travel from outer residential areas all around the city as fares drop."

Mr French said the increase would also help to meet the additional costs of diesel and above inflation pay rises for staff last year.

Research will be carried out during the trial to assess passenger reaction and each route will be monitored to see what effect the scheme has on passenger journeys.
