Langney Sports boss Garry Wilson has been named the Dr Martens League eastern division manager of the month.

Wilson has guided his men to nine matches without defeat and their six wins on the spin was only brought to an end on New Years Day when they were held to a goalless draw at St Leonards.

The Sports manager believes his team has now found the consistency that they were clearly lacking early on during the season.

He said: "When we were in the County League the boys were only really tested by the likes of Burgess Hill, Saltdean and Horsham YMCA.

"We could get away with lowering our performance level against lesser teams and still get results.

"It's taken the team a little while to adjust to the demands of the eastern division. We've been up and down and in this league you cannot usually get away with winning matches while playing poorly.

"The lads have now hit consistent performances levels and they should be given every credit. I simply take the credit when things go well and flak when they go badly.

"This is their award, as well as mine and the backroom team of coach Nick Greenwood and physio Ray Tuppen. They all deserve the accolade."

Langney have climbed into eighth position in the table, ten points behind the two promotion positions, but Wilson is playing down the chances of making a late dash for premier division status.

He admitted: "We're not contenders for promotion. This team is not good enough at the moment to mount a challenge. We've got a number of tough games coming up against sides that have stronger squads than us. If we were to finish in eighth at the end of the season I'd be very happy."

Langney travel to Spalding tomorrow and Wilson will have to make do without keeper Dean Lightwood (ankle) and has doubts over John Wescott (groin) and Stuart Jones (ankle).
