It was an interesting article in the Argus by Lord Bassam on the future of our new city in which he expressed the importance of a tolerant atmosphere for its future wellbeing.

But why oh why does he then have to put the boot in with his mention of the need for "homophobia conservative culture to be sidelined".

This, I believe, is a coded reference to traditional Christian values for which he appears to have no time.

He will have offended many of his readers by this intolerant approach, the exact opposite of that which he had been advocating.

He must remember he is now a peer of the realm and higher standards are expected of him.
