Q: I have heard it is possible to add more fonts to my computer. How can I do this?

A: There are indeed thousands of fonts that you can easily install on to your PC. The first step is to find a number of fonts that you are interested in.

There are many available free online. www.fontpool.com has a large selection of free and shareware fonts for download. When you have your fonts saved to a folder on your computer, go to the control panel (click Start, select Settings then click on Control Panel). Double click the Fonts icon then select Install New Font from the File menu. Select the folder that contains the fonts, each installable font will then be listed.

Select the fonts you want to install then click OK, ensuring that the Copy fonts to Fonts folder is checked.

Q I am running out of room on my hard disk. How do I fit an additional one?

AThis is too big a job to cover in this column but there is an excellent online resource that covers this in detail at: http://www.theathertons.demon.

co.uk/PCTips/InsHDD.htm. In terms of a good drive to buy, try to go for a well-known name such as Seagate or IBM. Scan (www.scan.co.uk) has some good drives, two in particular I would recommend are 46.1Gb IDE IBM ATA-100 75GXP for £126 plus VAT and 20.5Gb IDE Seagate ATA-100 for £86 plus VAT.

Q When my computer displays dates, they are always in the American format i.e. mm/dd/yy how can I change this to the English format dd/mm/yy?

A You will need to have your Windows 98/NT installation disk handy. Open the control panel (click Start, select Settings then click on Control Panel). Double click the Regional Settings icon and select English (United Kingdom) from the dropdown, this changes the date and number formatting to the UK standard. Click OK, you will probably be prompted to insert your Windows 98/NT installation CD at this point before the process is completed.

Q I am putting together a large document and want to put a copyright notice on each page but I cannot find the copyright symbol on the keyboard. Can you advise?

A The copyright symbol is not assigned a specific key on the keyboard. There are many symbols that are available in most fonts that can only be accessed through special keystrokes or the Character Map utility. This utility can be found in Accessories (click the Start button, select Programs then Accessories) and allows the user to view all available characters for a given font. When you have found the character you want it can then be copied to the clipboard and pasted into your document.
