WhileI agree wholeheartedly with James Greed that it is very good news that Brighton and Hove has been granted city status, I do not understand why this brings a "need" for a cathedral.
I do not think that anyone would say that Leeds is less of a city because it has no cathedral.
A cathedral houses the throne or 'cathedra' of a diocesan bishop. Brighton and Hove has no bishop of its own, so cannot have a cathedral.
