A man died today after being hit by a car as he tried to cross a busy Mid Sussex bypass.
His relatives had not been told of his death this morning as police were still trying to identify him.
The man, in his mid-20s, was crossing the A23 at Sayers Common when he was struck by a VW Passat on the northbound carriageway at 12.10am.
The 67-year-old driver, from East Grinstead, escaped injury.
Officers are appealing for witnesses to call them on 0845 6070999.
