Work on restoring the Dome at Brighton to its former glory has taken more than a year and the cost has been huge.
Now it's likely the reopening will be delayed beyond the expected time of this September and the cost will rise.
The delay will cause big problems for regular users of the Dome and is a big disappointment for everyone.
But it's better to get the restoration right than to bodge it. Quality will long be remembered after the price has been forgotten.
The Dome is a Grade l listed building and it is almost 200 years old. This is the first time experts have been able to look at the structure for more than half a century.
As with the Royal Pavilion, problems were then discovered which no one thought existed. They have to be solved before the job can be completed and we have a superb arena for the new city.
