Car crime and burglaries have fallen by up to 50 per cent in Hove and Shoreham.

The latest figures show that 27 car crimes were committed over the last week compared with 40 for the same period last year.

Police say there were only 15 burglaries in the Hove and Shoreham division last week, against 20 over the same time last year.

Sergeant Steve Barry of Hove police said: "We have also had good results in securing convictions against some of the more persistent burglars in the area.

"We have launched a number of initiatives to address crime and the fear of crime.

"These include a crackdown on abandoned cars, which can be vandalised and thus lead to people feeling unsafe."

Sgt Barry said police would also mount a campaign against double-parking at night in Hove.

He said: "Any vehicles we see will have a sticker attached to the windscreen warning that the owner faces a £30 fine.

"If we go back the following night or on subsequent nights and see the same vehicle double-parked we will automatically issue a £30 ticket."
