Bird campaigner Richard Vahrman fears the extinction of starlings on Brighton's derelict West Pier if it is restored (Argus, February 3).

Surely he must realise it will happen anyway due to eventual collapse if it is not.

Maintaining this eyesore to save the birds cannot be a cost-effective enterprise and does nothing to enhance the city's reputation.

I also wonder if those allowed on the pier in its present state of dereliction are covered by the owner's public liability insurance?
