Having been an Albion supporter for more than 30 years and a current season ticket holder, I must say Saturday's game against Cardiff passed off no differently to any other in the last two seasons at Withdean.
My father (who is in his 70s) and I returned home without seeing any signs of trouble either at the ground or on the streets. The only noticeable difference was the presence of what seemed like more police in one place than I have ever seen before and I'm sure they outnumbered the Cardiff supporters by two to one.
Yes, there was football violence in the Sixties and Seventies, Albion had their fair share of it and I have personally felt extremely threatened on many occasions by visiting fans. But football today at Withdean is nothing like the "bad old days" and for the most part is a pleasurable and safe experience, enjoyed by young and old alike.
