In a recent reply to me from Inspector Steve Long of Sussex Police, with regard to the problem of cars dangerously blocking the cycle lane in Coombe Terrace, it was stated "the prospect of Brighton police devoting any resources to this problem is remote".
How is it, then, that they are unable to deal with this dangerous and potentially fatal situation that occurs on a daily basis but police were somehow able to find the time and resources to fine a group of children for riding on the pavement (Argus, February 8)?
If the roads are so dangerous children have to ride on the pavement, surely the answer is to address the cause of that, not persecute children trying to avoid a dangerous situation?
If any other minority were ignored and persecuted in this manner by the authorities there would be a public outcry. So why are cyclists treated so badly?
