The former Bishop of Arundel and Brighton was installed as a cardinal by the Pope today.
The Most Rev Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, now Archbishop of Westminster, beamed in delight as he approached the Pontiff to receive his red hat.
He became Britain's top Roman Catholic in 1999 after many years in Sussex.
In a sunlit ceremony in St Peter's Square, the Pope installed 44 cardinals, a record number.
Pope John Paul II, now in the 23rd year of his papacy, has worked to boost the ranks of the cardinals - who act as his advisers - and their geographical diversity.
