Adur Council failed to set its budget after a five-hour meeting last night.

A council spokesman said a second meeting has been arranged for tomorrow to finalise the details.

The budget meeting is used to set council tax levels for the coming financial year.

A decision cannot be made without the full agreement of the council on all aspects of the budget.

A spokesman said: "The councillors thrashed out most aspects of the budget last night. The meeting did not end until 12.40am.

"There is still a bit of fine tuning to be done, but we expect tomorrow night's meeting to be a great deal shorter than last night's.

"Unfortunately, we cannot set the council tax levels until the whole budget is agreed."

Labour lost control of the council to the Conservatives in the local elections last year.

They have accused the Tories of trying to cut services and wanting to bring in a 7.4 per cent council tax increase.

Labour leader Mike Willson said: "The Tories have badly let down local residents."
