Jack Southerden, president of Hastings and St Leonards CC who died last month aged 85, was a legendary figure who had been a member of the club since 1934.

He logged every mile he rode and qualified for membership of the prestigious 300,000 Mile Club in 1975. By the time he had to hang up his wheels three years ago, due to failing eyesight, he had cycled an incredible total of 500,208 miles, the equivalent of 20 times round the world.

Jack was also a keen racer and won the East Sussex Best All-rounder Championship in 1950. He recently completed a book about the Hastings and St Leonards Club, which will be published this year to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

RIDERS BRAVE THE FREEZE Despite the freezing conditions, around 200 riders took part in the Gorrick Series mountain bike races in Hampshire.

The top Sussex competitor was Mike Thyer (Southwater Cycles), who won the Grand Veterans' race by seven minutes to retain his overall lead. Paul Byford (AD Cycles) finished fifth in the Masters race, while Brighton Mitre's Tony Richardson finished sixth in the Experts event.

Jim Barrow (Southwater Cycles) and Dave Bunting (Horsham Riders) placed ninth and 15th in the fun category race and Brian Trill (Horsham Riders) was 24th in the veterans' event.

A RECORD FOR COURT?

Brighton Mitre's club time trial this Saturday looks tailor-made for their record breaker, Tristan Court.

The event starts from Henfield Common (9am) and riders will cover two laps of a testing 11-mile circuit of Small Dole, Fulking, Poynings and Henfield.

Mark Jones (GS Stella) with one open win already this year, is among the field for the Redhill CC 19-mile time trial on Sunday.
